Health And Safety Fringe Meeting At CWU Conference A Resounding Success

The Health, Safety & Environment Department conference fringe meeting was held on 22 April and addressed by Jeremy Bevan the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Head Policy Adviser, Vulnerable Workers Health and Safety Policy Team, in the Strategic Interventions Division.

Derek Maylor, Chair of the North West BT Unions Health & Safety Co-ord attended the fringe meeting. Here he briefly outlines the event to Unionsafety:

Pic: Jeremy Bevan, HSE Head Policy Adviser"Around 100 delegates attended the largest fringe event at conference to listen to Jeremy discussing the aging workforce, migrant workers and areas where workers need more attention for their safety and welfare.

We can define vulnerable workers as those at risk in the workplace of having their rights denied; migrant workers, agency workers, and age related, both the old and the young.

For example, young workers are new to the workplace and face unfamiliar risks; they must be protected because of their lack of experience and the fact that they are not yet fully mature. Older workers may find themselves being asked to complete work beyond their physiological capacity, however both may be given unattainable targets by a management but unattainable for different reasons.

There is to be a European campaign entitled “sustainable work for healthier and longer lives” in 2016/17, this follows on from the fifth EuropeanWorking Conditions Survey which looked at the ways older workers perceive the sustainability of their work, taking account of differences between workers in terms of age, occupation and gender."
